102.1 KPRi ROCK WITHOUT RULES

Effective April 24, 2007, KPRI has discontinued streaming our programming on the internet. We apologize for the sudden disruption of service. A recent decision by the Copyright Royalty Board (an agency of the US Government) will result in a catastrophic increase in the rates we pay to owners of the copyrighted music we play. The decision has been crafted in such a way that ? in our opinion – the artists who actually create the music will see little ? if any ? of this money. Most of it will go to record labels and music publishing companies.

We began streaming as a free service to listeners around the world. KPRI has paid all of the costs including the charges for bandwidth and performance royalties. Since we are an independent station, and not owned by a major corporation, our first priority is to maintain our financial independence. Sometimes this involves difficult choices. Discontinuing the internet stream is one of those. The action of the CRB has made it financially impossible for us to continue.

It’s no secret that record companies are struggling. While tripling the royalty rates paid by internet radio stations may seem like good idea, It’ short-sighted. It will result in charges that exceed revenues bankrupting many independent internet stations. Ultimately, this will restrict the exposure of new artists and new music making it even more difficult for record companies.

Unless the US Congress intervenes, this disastrous decision takes effect on July 15, 2007. It will kill most independent internet streams. We hope you will get involved in this issue by lobbying the United States Congress to overturn this entirely wrong-headed action.
